C.G. Jung, On the Symbolism of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

“One could have known for a long time that there was a deep longing in the masses for an intercessor and mediatrix who would at last take her place alongside the Holy Trinity and be received as the ‘Queen of heaven and Bride at the heavenly court.’ For more than a thousand years it has been taken for granted that the Mother of God dwelt there.  I consider it to be the most important religious event since the Reformation. ” (Jung: Answer to Job)

In 1950, the idea that Virgin Mary was bodily taken up into Heaven was “dogmatically and infalliby”  defined by Pope Pius XII.

Jung became very excited about this as a symbolic movement in the Catholic Church towards the acceptance of the feminine.

However, there didn’t seem to be much follow through  on this one within the Church itself; it is as if the collective culture was not ready for it.    It does seem that now, early in the 21st century, that there is movement towards the absolute importance of one aspect of the feminine, towards the importance of  “Mother Earth” as something that is critical to our survival as a species.

In some ways, the development of ecology as  a scientific discipline — the recognition of the interconnectedness of all life — is part of this shift in consciousness.   It may not be soon enough to save Mother.

  1. I agree completely. However, Jung did say that this decision was the result of a kind of popular and collective change in people’s psychology, so there was some popular support for it. It also becomes even more difficult to address the mother feminine environmental issue with such a staggering rise in world population. Just an observation. Thank You

  2. To me it’s totally irrelevent and as obviously as nonsensical as transsubstantiation. Why? I ask myself would anyone give a damn about this fiction in 21st century?

  3. Can you point me to where in the Holy Bible it talks about the Virgin Mary please or anything to do with the Mother Mary? Thank you

  4. I think that this is one of Jung’s amazing insights re: the feminine. If we are made in the image of God & GOD is all-male, how do women come about? There has to be the feminine
in God! I also recall for Jung 4 was the perfect #, not 3 – right? So, Mary’s Assumption make 4! A perfect #!

  5. Jung had an idea that the Trinity was incomplete without the feminine….it was unbalanced. But the amazing thing is that the Virgin Mary is not the one who completes the Godhead. The feminine aspect is hidden in plain sight ….. it is the BRIDE …… it is us ….. redeemed humanity. The OT and the NT are all about God’s relationship with his bride and in the final chapters, which have yet to be fulfilled, God recreates the heavens and the earth, the heavenly city comes down to the earth and God dwells on the earth with his people. Then there is no more death, corruption, sorrow or pain. The foot of the cross is planted in the earth. We make up the four types in the Godhead when we are born again and baptised in the Holy Spirit. God knows what he’s doing. Amazing isn’t it!?!
